Mazda continues its premium push with the three-row CX-80. It offers six- or seven-seat capacity, and the recent upmarket interior touches found in models like the CX-60 and CX90. With available hybrid powertrain and an enjoyable on-road experience, the new model is shaping up positively.
Mazda's new large-scale platform, as promised, is giving rise to a diverse range of models, all equipped with electrified combustion engines, for various global markets. In the United States, we will see the CX-70 and CX-90, two large five- and seven-seater SUVs, while Japan and Europe will only receive the smaller CX-60 and the new CX-80 with an extended wheelbase.
However, in Australia, where Mazda products are highly sought after, we will have a unique lineup featuring all four CX SUVs in the same showroom by the end of 2024.

DESIGN

Inspired by Japanese art and its emphasis on the beauty in spaces between objects, Mazda's elegance is based on the unique hands-on approach of its designers and craftsmen. They combine human-centered design and engineering with precision and dedication, aiming to create cars that can only be made in Japan.
The new Mazda CX-80 is a premium SUV with a three-row layout, designed to be both luxurious and durable. It reflects the brand's "Graceful Toughness" design concept, with a focus on maneuverability and parking. The body was carefully crafted for ease of use in everyday driving.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The CX-60 is a two-row SUV that exudes a rugged and strong vibe, but it also has a sense of sophistication and beauty thanks to its KODO design. But the Mazda CX-80 takes it to the next level.
This SUV has an architectural design that gives off a calm and luxurious feeling. It really emphasizes the premium quality of its three-row seats, while still maintaining that Mazda elegance.
With its long nose and rear-wheel-drive setup, the CX-80 is an imposing sight, standing out as the flagship of Mazda's lineup. Its grille and headlights are dynamic and commanding, adding to its presence.On the side, the CX-80 gets a touch of class thanks to all the attention to detail. Its nose and cabin are fully utilized, without any unnecessary bits, and the side windows get the focus.
The CX-80 has some really cool extended side windows with chrome moldings that are thicker and more straight at the D-pillar, giving it a third seating row. The way those chrome trim pieces are shaped creates a 3D effect, like a jewel carved out of metal.
And then there are those seamlessly integrated roof rails, which add to the length of that three-tier cab. The 20-inch alloy wheel color is a grey metallic that softens the contrast with the paint, making the whole thing look more refined and classy.
Looking at it from the back, the CX-80's width is highlighted by the lack of an exhaust finish. The pipe is hidden behind the bumper, giving it a cleaner, more elegant look.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The CX-60 has a wide dashboard with side air vents that extend into the door trim, making the interior feel really spacious.
Its console has a strong design with a powerful shape that goes from front to back. This emphasizes both the structural integrity of the car and the position of the engine and transmission components underneath. There's an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the engine is mounted in the front, longitudinally.
At the back, there are USB ports and controls for the heated seats, which make the rear passengers more comfortable. The rear console has also been redesigned with metallic trim that matches the front and door trims, creating a unified look.
The interior design of this car is a testament to Japanese craftsmanship. It's inspired by two traditional Japanese concepts - kaicho and hacho. Kaicho means harmony, and it's achieved through the use of high-quality materials like real maple wood and Nappa leather. Hacho means rhythm, and that's shown by the sophisticated musubu stitching. It's like ancient Japanese knot tying and adds depth to the interior.
The interior is all about the interplay of light and nature. The white lighting on the doors enhances the beauty of the wood and leather finishes. It gives the whole cabin a simple, elegant feel that's typical of Japanese design.

POWERTRAINS

The Mazda CX-80 has a range of powertrain options, including electrified options. This is because Mazda wants to offer a variety of choices for customers and meet the demand for sustainable transportation.
For the CX-80, Mazda uses the Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture. This allows them to use motors and batteries of different sizes in the same model, depending on the vehicle's needs. They can also place the motor either in front of or behind the engine, depending on what works best.
There are two powertrain choices for the CX-80: a hybrid version with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine and electrification technology, and a diesel version with a six-cylinder engine and M Hybrid Boost. The M Hybrid Boost is Mazda's mild hybrid system that helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Both engines come with an 8-speed automatic and Mazda's all-wheel drive system. You can choose from four driving modes with Mazda's Mi-Drive, including EV mode for the plug-in hybrid.

2.5 LITRE E-SKYACTIV PHEV

The Mazda CX-80 e-Skyactiv PHEV has a hybrid engine that combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with direct injection, and it works with a powerful electric motor to create a combined output of 327 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.
The electric motor can deliver 129 hp on its own from zero rpm, so the car can accelerate quickly. It also has a big battery that can store energy, which helps the engine when it's running on gasoline. This means the CX-80 can go from 0-60 mph in just 6.8 seconds!
At its top speed, the CX-80 goes 195 mph, but it can also cruise on electric power alone for longer distances. This makes it a great all-around vehicle that's fun to drive and efficient to use.
When it's running solely on electricity, the PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) really shines in terms of its environmental impact. According to the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Test Procedure) standard, its combined fuel consumption is just 1.6 liters per 100 kilometers, and its combined CO2 emissions are a measly 36 grams per kilometer. The Mazda CX-80 e-Skyactiv PHEV can travel up to 60 kilometers on electric power by itself!

3.3 LITRE E-SKYACTIV D

The 3.3-liter inline-six engine with common rail electric direct fuel injection, powered by the e-Skyactive D unit with 254 horsepower, is built with the idea of "right-sizing" in mind. That means it's optimized for displacement to maximize fuel efficiency and power. It's paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
This engine has Mazda's 48V mild hybrid system, which is called M Hybrid Boost. It helps boost performance and gas mileage. The innovative combustion technology, called DCPCI (distributed-controlled partially premixed compression ignition), further improves efficiency, emissions, and gas mileage, reaching over 40% thermal efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions.
Together, these two technologies contribute to the CX-80's long driving range and impressive performance. You get a powerful, responsive drive, while still getting great gas mileage and low emissions.
The e-Skyactiv D engine in the CX-80 is seriously powerful. It can go from 0-100 in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of over 200 km/h! It also has great fuel efficiency, with an average of around 5.8 L/100km That means it only emits about 150 grams of CO2 per km.
This engine has a six-cylinder inline configuration, which gives it a smooth and quiet drive. It's also pretty lightweight, thanks to the simple design, so it doesn't affect handling like a heavier engine would.
