Mazda CX-5 2024 Overview
Taking a look back at Mazda's CX-5 history, it's clear that it's had a pretty successful run. It might not have as many awards as some other cars, but it's been around for seven years and is still one of our favorites.
If you are ready, friends, let's take a look at all the characteristics of the Mazda CX 5.

The CX-5 has a great engine and all-wheel drive, and while it might not be the fastest or most powerful, it's still got a lot going for it. The 2.5L-liter turbocharged engine is a bit more powerful, but Mazda has opted for a traditional automatic transmission instead of the CVT, which is nice.
While the CX-5 might not have all the bells and whistles of some newer models, it still has its own unique style and charm. Sitting in the driver's seat, you can feel the luxury and quality that Mazda has put into this car. For space, we would go with the newer Honda CR-V or the slightly bigger CX-50. But despite its age, the CX-5 is still an awesome car and we think it deserves a place on our Editors' Choice list for 2024. It's like it has something to prove, you know?
What's New for 2024?
So, what's new for Mazda in 2024? They've softened up the front springs and adjusted the stabilizer bars to give you better initial turning when you're going around corners. They've also added a 10.25" touchscreen center display for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, along with some cosmetic updates for different trim levels. And in Canada and the US, there's a new Suna Turbo and Carbon Turbo model.
So, as they did with the CX-30 and the 3-series sedan and hatchback, Mazda is adding the Carbon Turbo trim option to the CX-5 for the 2024 model year. You can easily spot a CX-5 in Carbon Turbo, because it's painted in brown Zircon Sand and has black trim pieces, including the wheels and mirror covers. Carbon Turbo models get the optional 256 hp turbocharged 2.5L engine and all-wheel drive.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the Mazda CX-5 from 2024 starts at around $30,720 and can go up to $42,020, depending on the model and features.
In our opinion, the Turbo Premium model is the best version of the CX-5. It has a powerful 256 horsepower turbocharged engine that makes it really quick. The exterior is sleek and sporty, with black accents that add a touch of elegance. The interior is also sporty, but in a more refined way, with red accents and stitching that complete the look.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood is an 187 horsepower, inline-4 engine with standard four-wheel drive.
The optional 256 horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is the way to go, but thankfully, Mazda has ditched the popular continuously variable transmission (CVT) and instead uses a standard six-speed auto, which really makes the CX-5 a joy to drive.
The CX-5 has a great little four-cylinder engine that gives it a ton of power when you're taking off from a stoplight or driving around town. It feels faster than it really is, but at higher speeds, it starts to feel a bit underpowered. We tested the turbocharged version and that was a lot more powerful. Both engines come with a quick six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, so you don't have to drive hard to enjoy them.
The steering is so precise and the handling is smooth, making for a great Sunday drive. The car handles rough roads well without any drama and has the kind of ride quality that you'd expect from a crossover that costs twice as much. There's no road noise and the suspension is just right - not too stiff or too bouncy.
On curvy roads, the Mazda really comes to life. The grip is amazing and you can really feel the power under your feet. All in all, the CX-5 is a great car that delivers on all fronts. The electric power steering gives a nice response. We tested the Signature model and it had a great brake pedal feel, which worked without any delay and wasn't too sensitive when you applied the brakes.
Towing and Payload Capacity
The Mazda CX-5 can only tow up to 2k, which isn't a lot, but it's better than some of the other SUVs out there, like the Tiguan and CR-V. But the bigger CX-50 can do more, with a maximum towing capacity of 3.5k with the turbo engine. Otherwise, it'll only tow as much as the regular CX-5.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The CX-5 comes with two engine choices, and each one has a different fuel economy rating. The base engine, which is a 2.5 liter, gets 24 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles on the highway. But if you want more power, there's also a turbocharged engine that gets 22 miles in the city and 27 miles on the interstate. We tested both of them on our 75 mph highway route, as part of our rigorous testing process, and the regular engine got 32 miles to the gallon, compared to the turbo's 30.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The interior is really classy, with a mix of different materials and colors. There's terracotta leather, with black fake suede accents, terracotta stitching, and black piping.
Wake up in the top-of-the-line CX-5 and you might think you got kidnapped by some Audi or Mercedes drivers. All the fancy materials and layout make it feel like you're in some high-end place. The accelerator pedal that's hinged to the floor feels better than the regular one that's suspended above it. The steering wheel is perfectly crafted and it's right in front of you, not at an angle like in some cars. And all the front seats have armrests at the same height, so it's super comfortable.
But there are a few downsides. In our testing, the CX-5 could only hold nine carry-ons behind the back seats. The trunk floor is completely flat, though, so there's plenty of room for stuff. And there are all these little nooks and crannies around the cabin for your smartphone and other small things. Like, the center console has this deep tray and a really useful bin with a removable shelf.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Every model has a 10.3" infotainment screen that you control with a rotating dial and volume knob in the middle console. You can also use voice commands and buttons on the steering wheel to navigate the interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on all models. The CX-5 also has Mazda Connected Services, which lets you control your car remotely through a smartphone app with a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The CX-5 has all kinds of driver assistance features as standard, and some optional extras too. For more info on the CX-5's safety ratings, check out the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Some key safety features include:
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.

Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
