BMW X4 History
As the X5 became more popular, BMW saw the opportunity to turn it into an elegant X6 fastback SUV. When the smaller X3 took off, BMW wanted to cater to those who wished to fashionable compact SUV buyers, so they created the X4, which emerged as a result of this endeavor.
The F26 X4 was first shown off as a concept at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2013 and finally made it to production at the New York Auto Show the following year. It was built at BMW's plant in Greer, South Carolina, and it shares some of the same parts as the X3—like the turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, the eight-speed auto transmission, and the all-wheel drive system. But it has a slightly sturdier chassis and quicker steering, which makes it handle better.
The bet proved successful for BMW, allowing them to launch the second generation of the X4, which debuted at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as a 2019 model. Like many other BMW X models, the G02 X4 was manufactured in South Carolina, sharing the CLAR platform with the X3. It followed a familiar pattern, featuring turbocharged I-4 and I-6 engines, a sportier character, and a luxurious design. The G02 X4 also improved in terms of functionality compared to its predecessor. The rear seats and cargo area were still less spacious than in the X3, but the improvement was less significant than before. For the 2022 model year, the G02 X4 received updates, including revised styling, enhanced infotainment, and mild hybrid technology for its I-6 engine.
Although the X4 was available in various performance configurations, some drivers still desired more. To cater to their needs, BMW introduced the full-fledged X4 M, which was unveiled in 2020. The X4 M and its more aggressive Competition variant feature an aggressive body kit, a turbocharged I-6 engine, larger brakes, stickier tires, and other features that are typical of BMW's Motorsport-inspired products.
As BMW continues to electrify its lineup, it is possible that an all-electric version of the X4 is in the works. This may be unveiled alongside or in place of the next-generation X4, which is expected to be unveiled around the 2024 model year when the G02 generation is set to end.
BMW X4 2025 Review
The BMW X4 is a popular compact luxury SUV. You could also go for the more boxy-looking X3, which has the same powerful engines and chassis as the X4. It's a bit cheaper and has more room in the back and a bigger trunk. But some people might not like the more conventional look of the X3. That's where the sleek X4 comes in. The X4 xDrive30i has a 248-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The sportier M40i has a turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower. All X4s come with all-wheel drive. They have a sophisticated interior that can fit four or five people. Its rivals, the Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5 are more about comfort than performance. If you want more power, BMW has the 503 horsepower M version, which we'll review separately.
What's new for 2025, guys?
BMW has added heated front seats as standard for all X4 models from 2025. They've also included remote start in both the convenience and premium packages.
The cost and which one to select
The starting price for the 2025 BMW X4 starts at $ 56,475 but it can go up to $ 67,875 depending on how you customize it. The M40I has a turbocharged six-cylinder engine, which is pretty awesome, but the 30I with its turbo four-cylinder is still pretty powerful. We'd go with the 30I because it's more fuel-efficient, and we'd add the premium package for things like heated seats and a heads-up display.
Friends but which BMW model would you like to buy? I ask you to share your thoughts on this with us in the Feedback section.
Engine and Performance
The standard BMW X4 xDrive30i has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. For something more powerful, the X4 M40i might be your best bet. It has a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder that makes a whopping 382 hp and 365 lb-ft, and it sounds great too. Standard features include launch control. Both models have an 8-speed auto transmission that sends power to all 4 wheels. No matter which X4 you go with, you'll have a comfortable ride and precise handling. On the track, the X4 xDrive30i did a great job, getting to 60 mph in a decent 6.2 seconds. Compared to the M40i, which did the same thing in just 4.2 seconds according to our tests.
Friends, I think that BMW models surpass the Mercedes models in every indicator. What do you think about it? Share your feedback with us.
Fuel Economy
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the X4 xDrive30i should get 21 mpg in cities and 27 mpg on the highway, but we got 33 mpg on the freeway in our tests.
They claim that the X4 M40i should achieve 22 miles per gallon in urban areas and 26 miles per gallon on highways, but we managed to achieve 28 miles per gallon on the highway with this particular model.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The X4's interior is a work of art. The center console is like a superhero shield, with a slick touchscreen that blends right in.
In the back, the X4 has 35.5 inches of rear legroom, which is a bit less than the X3's 36.4 inches. But, it makes up for it in cargo space. With all seats up, you get 19 cubes, but if you fold down the back seats, it opens up to 51 cubes. The X3, is better for cargo, though, with 29 cubes behind the second row and 63 cubes when the seats are down.
Infotainment
The base model X4 comes equipped with HD radio and a 12-speaker sound system. It also has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, allowing for seamless integration with your device. A standard integrated navigation system is included, as well as an infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
The BMW has some great driver assistance features, but the best ones are only available in optional packages.
Some of the key safety features include:
Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking (standard)
Lane departure warning with lane keeping assist (standard)
Adaptive cruise control (available)
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The X4's warranty for the X4 is superior to that of less expensive mainstream models, but it falls short when compared to the coverage provided by its rivals in the luxury competitors.
The X4 comes with complimentary scheduled maintenance, which is not a feature offered by all luxury models.
The warranty for the X4 covers four years or 50,000 miles, while the powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles. The X4 also provides complimentary maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.
